The Lehigh County jail has held two voluntary mass clinics with the Johnson & Johnson  vaccine since May, putting shots into 322 arms. Corrections Director Janine Donate said now they’ve switched strategies: they are waiting until they get enough inmates interested – about four or five – to use up a vial of vaccine.

Some inmates in Lehigh Valley jails will be able to visit loved ones in person after more than a year of COVID-19 lockdowns in Lehigh and Northampton county jails.

Under Pennsylvania’s original vaccine rollout plan, incarcerated people were second in line for the COVID-19 shots, as a vulnerable population. More than half of those in state penitentiaries have now been fully dosed, according to the Department of Corrections.

WLVR’s Tyler Pratt recently spoke with Norberto, who is now home. He said the conditions and isolation at the jail in lockdown were dramatically worse than any of his previous experiences.

Concerned residents held a vigil outside the Lehigh County Jail in Allentown over the weekend with signs and candles to remember an inmate and correctional officer who recently died from COVID-19 and to raise awareness of what they say are dangerous conditions inside.
