In an emergency, 911 will connect you to first responders. But locally, there is also a 211 number that can help point users to the assistance they need.

The United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley uses 211 to connect those in need to services such as shelter and housing, veterans assistance, food pantries and more. Priscilla Rosado directs Food Access and Emergency Services for the group.

“Folks can just simply dial 211, and let them know what they’re looking for. If they’re looking for a meal for Thanksgiving, dial 211 and we’ll be able to direct them to the specific resource and place and time and location,” said Rosado.

The United Way has compiled a list of those resources, including Thanksgiving meals. And telephone access means that users don’t have to have internet access.

In years past, many food pantries offered sit-down meals. But this year there is the pandemic to consider.

“So many of them have had to shift and pivot what they used to do in previous years and make it more like a grab-and-go situation, but still allowing for those meals to be provided to those in need,” Rosado said.

The 211 help line is available 24 hours, seven days a week.
