One of the hardest-hit segments of the economy this year is the travel industry. But the Lehigh Valley International Airport announced an expansion Tuesday. United Airlines will add two direct flights daily to Washington, D.C.

Airport Authority Executive Director Thomas Stoudt says the non-stop flights to Dulles International Airport are a welcome addition.

“The way passengers are traveling right now, is that business travel demand is down, and leisure travel demand is up. Really looking at ways to capitalize on that. And I think this was a great synergy of opportunities from ABE to connect that service today,” Stoudt said.

2019 brought the most passengers to the airport in years. But the pandemic has changed all that. Traffic plunged 71% between the summer of 2019 and this year.

The new flights to the nation’s capital begin Dec. 17.

United’s current service from LVIA includes O’Hare International Airport in Chicago and Newark via the United shuttle.
