Tech Expert’s Suggestions for Online Security While Home Learning

With so many Lehigh Valley school kids taking some or all of their classes online, cyber-security in the home is a growing concern. WLVR’s Brittany Sweeney reports on how parents can improve online safety.

Tech expert Brandy Bell-Truskey says setting boundaries is the first step in keeping children safe online.

Bell-Truskey – who works for AT&T – says start by using apps that can combine content filtering, screen-time regulation and location services for family members.

She also suggests checking privacy settings as apps and websites can share your location without you knowing it.

“What are those apps allowed to do when they’re on your child’s device and you need to look at that, especially location sharing, I would recommend turning it off. Don’t allow the app to share to social media on your child’s behalf. Also, make sure you’re looking at those video game privacy settings as well,” said Bell-Truskey.

The tech expert and mom of two says it’s important to talk with your kids. If something happens online that feels uncomfortable, they should let an adult know.
