Millions of Pennsylvanians may have lost federal benefits since the end of July. The now shuttered pandemic unemployment compensation program provided an extra $600 dollars a week to people out of work due to coronavirus.

Susan Dickinson is the Unemployment Compensation Benefits Policy for Labor and Industry. She said this week, roughly two million residents had received at least one federal payment since March.

“There could be those who have exhausted benefits or have gone back to work, so I don’t know how many lost it when it ended last week, but about 2 million people have gotten that funding since the beginning of the pandemic,” said Dickson.

The Department of Labor & Industry officials say they are imploring Congress to extend benefits. He also says the state continues to deal with thousands of fraudulent claims and has prevented more than $44 million from going into the wrong hands.

Labor & Industry held a virtual town hall to answer questions about unemployment benefits Thursday at 1 pm.m.
