Kutztown University launches new addition counseling program amid opioid epidemic

Before the coronavirus pandemic, Pennsylvania was fighting back against the opioid epidemic.

As WLVR’s Brittany Sweeney reports, this fall, Kutztown University is joining the battle with a new addiction counseling graduate program.

Dr. Scott Tracy is a professor with Kutztown’s Department of Counselor Education and Student Affairs. He says there’s been a need for an addiction counseling program like this for years.

“It’s long overdue and so when you actually look at nationwide under accredited programs, there’s, I think, probably only about a dozen programs nationwide that are accredited in addiction counseling and so Kutztown will be one of those.”

Kutztown already has one of the largest counseling programs in the state, with addiction counselling now becoming the fourth specialty to be offered.

Tracy says it meets the requirements of the American Society for Addiction Medicine and will eventually be accredited.
