While the number of people being tested for the coronavirus continues to steadily increase, health officials say the time it takes to get results in pennsylvania is still seven to 14 days in many cases. But as WLVR’s Brittany Sweeney reports, a local company could have an at-home COVID-19 test on shelves in the near future.

Bethlehem’s Orasure Technologies announced this week that it expects to launch a rapid, over-the-counter antigen test before the end of the year.

CEO Stephen Tang says that means people could test themselves to find out whether they are positive – eliminating the need to go to a pharmacy or medical provider and taking labs out of the equation all together.

“You can actually use our product in the comfort of your home. As we’ve been saying, we want to test anyone, anywhere at any time. And that’s it, that’ll be a real benefit,”said Tang.

The biotech firm received federal funding to develop the self-test in April – hoping to roll it out before fall – that timeline has now been pushed to late fall.

Tang says Orasure is waiting on FDA approval before the COVID-19 antigen self-test can be shipped to a home or business.
