Effective immediately, Pennsylvanians are now required to wear a mask whenever they leave home and go into public spaces.

The new order signed this afternoon by state Health Secretary Rachel Levine expands the previous rule dating back to April, requiring people to wear masks when entering businesses.

Now masks are required outdoors as well – in public places outdoors where social distancing isn’t possible.

In a statement, Governor Tom Wolf said the move is designed to halt a recent increase in COVID-19 cases linked to people not wearing masks.

There are limited exceptions — including some medical conditions and disabilities that make mask-wearing unsafe, and for children under two.

Pennsylvania reported more than 600 new coronavirus cases today, bringing the statewide total over 87-thousand.

The state has seen an uptick in new cases since mid-June.
