Two Central PA summer arts festivals move online

“We will have a mixture of some live events, and some sort of private links to see entertainers that we would have normally had here at the festival.”

Every year in July, two arts festivals bring thousands of visitors to Centre County, Pennsylvania. But as WPSU’s Kristine Allen reports, this year the festivals will come to the visitors.

The second Thursday in July has, for decades, marked the start of the sidewalk sale for the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in State College, and the opening of the People’s Choice Festival in Boalsburg. Now, for the first time ever, because of COVID-19, both juried arts shows have moved online.

People’s Choice co-director John Madison says the art will still be for sale.

“If you see something you want to purchase, you’ll be able to buy it,” said Madison.

Rick Bryant, executive director of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts says not only will there be artwork for sale on their website – they’ll also have virtual art demos and music performances.

“We will have a mixture of some live events and some sort of private links to see entertainers that we would have normally had here at the festival.”

“Most of the activity will take place on our website, arts-festival.com,” Bryant said. “And the sidewalk sale will open at 10 in the morning on Thursday, just like it does every year.”

Those entertainers will include national and international acts, like fiddler Alasdair Fraser, and local favorites like the Triple A Blues band.

Both virtual festivals run through Sunday.
