A new report says Pennsylvania will need about 70 million dollars to safely run the presidential election in November.

Researchers say more than 400 million dollars will be needed nationwide to address the voting crisis brewing due to the coronavirus pandemic.

They also note the federal government should cover most of the cost.

The team that did the study includes PittCyber’s Chris Deluzio.

“To keep voters safe, to keep poll workers and election staff safe while also being called on to carry out free and fair elections is a herculean task,” says Deluzio.

That means buying personal protective equipment for election workers, and perhaps paying them more.

Jurisdictions also will need to buy cleaning supplies for machines and voting locations, as even all-mail states have voting centers.

The shift to voting by mail — whether by voter preference or government directive — presents its own costs such as postage as well as scanners and overtime or extra staff for processing
