New Bethany Ministries has partnered with Comfort Suites and the City of Bethlehem to provide housing for the homeless during COVID-19. WLVR’s Tracy Yatsko spoke with one family who was once living in a tent and is receiving temporary shelter in a hotel.

Steve and his 81-year-old mother Ruthann have been homeless since November due to a series of unfortunate circumstances.

“It’s crazy. You’re cold. It’s damp. You can’t build fires. You don’t want people that you don’t know coming and then you got to be afraid to leave sometimes because you don’t know what’s going to happen. You come back and everything’s gone, and there’s only so much help and it’s limited help,” said Steve.

Steve and Ruthann found help thanks to local efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus among the vulnerable homeless population. New Bethany is providing case management services for those in the program, including employment and permanent housing options.

“It’s wonderful having a place and knowing that if it rains you’re not going to get wet, we have been very very wet at times.”

Steve and Ruthann say they feel blessed to have a roof and a bed… but the best thing, they found hope.
