A local biotech firm is working on a home test for the coronavirus.

Orasure technologies has secured a $700,000 federal contract to develop what’s called a “rapid antigen test.”

Orasure CEO Stephen Tang says once approved, the test could be shipped directly to homes, eliminating trips to hospitals or doctors’ offices, easing the burden on labs.

“We know the clock is ticking here, and everybody wants to get back to their normal lives. And I think the more we can help with testing for the masses, the better off we’ll all be,” said Tang.

Tang says individuals will be able to swab their own gums and then run the test in about 20 minutes to see if they’re positive for COVID-19 and capable of spreading the infection.

Tang says he hopes to get the test to market before fall, or sooner if possible.

Orasure specializes in the development, manufacturing and distribution of rapid diagnostic tests and have successful ebola and HIV tests on the market.
