Lehigh Valley nonprofit Promise Neighborhoods has been reaching out to families with young children in need because of the coronavirus pandemic. WLVR’s Staci Inez explains the group’s work in the community.

Volunteers have been going door to door in allentown with more than 9,000 flyers to let people know Promise Neighborhoods has resources available.

They’ve given away at least 30,000 diapers and helped more than 300 families. The nonprofit is also distributing food and baby formula, says director, Dr. Hasshan Batts.

“People are really suffering. The people that were hungry prior to COVID and the pandemic are hungrier. The people that were in need are more in need. The people that were wrestling with housing instability are really in trouble,” said Batts.

And Dr. Batts said former and current gang members in the community are helping deliver supplies, like Jose Rivera.

“It’s important for me to help out because I was part of the problem for years… I just finished coming home out of the prison system and I needed something that was going to keep me busy, but not put me back in the system,” said Rivera.

Rivera says he enjoys the hands-on volunteer work and he doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
