Schools districts throughout the Lehigh Valley are working to get meals to students in the wake of school closures across the state. WLVR’S Staci Inez stopped by schools in Allentown this week to see if word about the pickups got out.

Allentown’s Superintendent Thomas Parker says this is a time for the district to really support its community.

“The school tends to be the hub of the community. We’re providing meals at each school because it is critical and important for our community and that’s not something we can afford not to do,” said Parker.

Right now Parker says they don’t know when schools will reopen because they are taking direction from the state. The meals are available at all Allentown district schools from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There’s information about pickups on the school district website.

But parent Tanya Bernhard says people need to spread the word about free meals kids.

“Not all families are able to see the updates online. They don’t have the technology to do so,” said Bernhard.

Allentown’s superintendent says the district is currently trying to work out how to get meals to kids over the weekend as well.
