Bethlehem schools team up with Service Electric on free wifi for families in need

Schools in Pennsylvania are closed for two weeks. Lehigh valley educators are working on ways to keep students learning — online.

But some families have little to no access to the internet.

The Bethlehem area school district is working to solve that problem – with free wifi options for residents.

Bethlehem Superintendent Dr. Joseph Roy said Service Electric is now offering free wifi to eligible people living in the company’s coverage area. He said this is a big help to families in need.

“We’ve worked with our community centers to help make sure they have internet access or the public library, but the guidance is to stay home. If you don’t have internet access at home, we’re saying stay home and not be able to access education,” said Roy.

Roy says with the possibility that schools will be closed for longer than the original 10 days anticipated, internet access has become another top priority.

The district is also working with t-mobile to make hotspots available to kids and families who don’t fall in the service electric coverage area.
