Lehigh County, PA- Parkland High School’s robotics team narrowly missed competing at the World’s competition last year. This month seniors are busy with coding, building, practicing, and gearing up for their last chance to compete as Trojans on the international stage.

Vying for the top spot in a high school robotics competition in 2020 means you have to do more than build a robot. You have to incorporate autonomous driving into your design.

Arjun Vedantham, a senior at Parkland, is the team’s chief programmer.

“I’m more interested in artificial intelligence. So I’ve been really interested in trying to apply AI principles to our robot here,” says Vedantham

Thanks in part to Arjun, the robot can successfully drive on its own. But it can also pick up large plastic blocks, stack them, and drop them neatly into corners.

Later this month, Parkland will bring their robot to the state championship, A qualifier for the world competition. It’s the seniors’ last chance at global glory.
