A strong police force, economic development and supporting children in need are Allentown Mayor Ray O’Connell’s top goals for the coming year. WLVR’s Staci Inez attended his State of the City address on Friday.

Mayor Ray O’Connell spoke at the East Side Youth Center in Allentown, highlighting investments in youth programs throughout the city.

Some of the big issues during the address included public safety. After a string of violence throughout the summer and fall, Mayor O’Connell said he is confident in Police Chief Glenn Granitz and the police department.

He also touched on child hunger, and how the city fed 34,000 kids during after school and summer feeding programs. Taxes are not on track to be raised in 2020 or 2021, and economic development is at a high.

“Now we have to continue the work of revitalizing the south side, the east side and the west side, and we’re doing that. Our CED Department with Leonard Lightener, we’re meeting with developers every day,” said Mayor O’Connell.

Now the mayor has said by raising taxes in 2019, that allowed the city’s credit outlook to be restored from negative to stable.
