The top Lehigh Valley political contests for the spring primary election are taking shape. The deadline for state and Congressional leaders to get on the ballot was earlier this week.
Tuesday was the final day for candidates to file nominating petitions to run in Pennsylvania’s primary on April 28th.
Three Republicans are vying to challenge incumbent Democrat Susan Wild for the Lehigh Valley’s congressional seat. The GOP contenders are former Lehigh County Commissioners Dean Browning and Lisa Scheller; and Matt Connolly of Bethlehem Township, who has run twice before.
Wild is serving her first term in Congress and won’t face an opponent in the Democratic primary.
In the State House, Representative Peter Schweyer of Allentown will be challenged in the Democratic primary by community organizer Enid Santiago.
Meanwhile, eight candidates have signed up for a bid to replace two state representatives who chose not to seek re-election: Republicans Justin Simmons and Marcia Hahn.
Candidates who filed petitions have until March 4th to withdraw from the race.
